Every proposal costs Connects, and Connects cost money. Many freelancers burn them on jobs they never had a real chance to win. Use this checklist before you apply.
The 7-point checklist
- Payment verified. A verified payment method is the minimum.
- Hire history. A client who has hired before and left reviews is more likely to hire again.
- Money spent. Some spending history shows they are serious.
- A clear job description. If you cannot tell what success looks like, the project may be messy.
- A fair budget. Compare it with the real work. Very low budgets often bring difficult clients.
- Competition. Fewer proposals, or being early, improves your chances.
- Real fit. Do you have proof (samples, past work) for exactly this type of job?
Score each job
Give one point for each item. If a job scores 5 or more, apply with a strong, personal proposal. Under 4, skip it and save your Connects for a better one.
Red flags
- Asking for free work beyond a small sample.
- Asking to communicate or pay outside Upwork.
- Vague descriptions with huge promises.
- Many recent jobs with no hires.
Spend the Connects you save on better proposals
Ten carefully chosen, personal proposals usually win more than fifty rushed ones. Read our guide on how to write an Upwork proposal that gets replies.
The SunReply extension shows the key client signals in one line on every job and gives a fit score from 1 to 10, so this checklist takes seconds.
