Many Upwork jobs add screening questions. Clients often read the answers before the cover letter, because they show quickly who understood the job. Short, direct, honest answers win.
The rules
- Answer exactly what was asked. No copy of your cover letter.
- One to three sentences per answer is usually enough.
- Be specific: tools, steps, timeframes, links to real work.
- Be honest. If you have not done something, say what similar work you have done.
Common questions and how to answer
"Describe your recent experience with similar projects."
ExampleLast month I built a list of 400 verified e-commerce founders in the UK for a marketing agency, using Apollo and manual LinkedIn checks. Bounce rate after their campaign was under 2%.
Use only real projects and real numbers.
"How would you approach this project?"
ExampleFirst I would confirm your exact filters (country, role, company size). Then I would pull and verify the contacts, and send you a sample of 20 rows on day one so you can check quality before I finish the rest.
"How long will it take?"
ExampleAbout 3 working days for 500 contacts, including verification. I can deliver a first sample within 24 hours.
"What tools do you use?"
ExampleApollo and LinkedIn Sales Navigator for finding contacts, and an email verification tool for checking every address before delivery.
"Do you have questions for me?"
ExampleYes: will you use these contacts for cold email or for LinkedIn outreach? It changes which details I should prioritize.
Mistakes to avoid
- "Please see my cover letter" instead of an answer.
- Inventing experience or results.
- Very long answers that hide the point.
- Suggesting contact or payment outside Upwork.
